The Hula Hula Room is a Tiki Bar in Torrance California. We had the pleasure of assisting the owners with all creative touch points on this project. We worked on the project from the initial concept, through naming, brand design and interior design. The result is a true tropical oasis that allows guests to feel like they are on a tropical vacation, even if it’s just for an hour or two!

The Hula Hula Room Branding
The Problem
The location of the bar is in a strip mall in a very middle class community. It’s a nice neighborhood but not quite an area where people would get dressed up to go. It caters to a casual middle-class crowd and is located next to a hospital, making it an ideal spot for nurses and doctors to unwind after their shifts. After interviewing a few nurses, we discovered the need for a venue that is casual enough for them to visit straight from work, still in scrubs, yet updated enough to attract the younger crowd on a Saturday night. The location used to be a very dark dive bar called The Zebra Room. It felt dark and small in there.
How We Helped
During our branding process we carefully outlined the balance of casual and fancy… we knew we needed to fall above the dive bar experience but below the swanky lounge scene.
After having a clear mood board and direction for the project we went to work on creating a logo system that was fun, tropical, and also approachable. We expanded the deliverables to create coaster, match boxes, t-shirt graphics, and of course a cocktail menu.
For the physical space, we were able to create an environment where people can escape from daily life. We built out tiki huts over the two back booths, adorned the walls with tropical wall paper and retro tiki prints. We created a tropical living wall and hung plants from the ceiling with straw lighting fixtures.
The Results
The Hula Hula Room has opened with record numbers for our clients. They own six local bars, and The Hula Hula Room is exceeding all of them. Clientele feedback emphasizes the necessity for a venue like this in Torrance: somewhere fun and fresh to go have a drink after work or before dinner.
We have successfully created a space where people can feel like they are on vacation. We balanced updated and fresh with retro vacation vibes. People can come in, and check out for a few hours while enjoying their favorite tropical cocktail.
